The first day I went to work in a nice shirt and tie (and pants). By the time I got home, I was drenched in sweat, and the shirt looked more navy than royal blue. Everyone at work wears whatever they want, from suits to t-shirts and shorts, and I was told a few times that day that the dress code was “whatever you want”. The next day I decided to err with comfort, and ditched the tie. It didn’t help as much as I would have liked, but it did provide me better ventilation. I stayed with that look through Thursday, and on Friday I abandoned formality altogether and wore a sweatshirt and jeans.
Friday was also the day that our office was moving from the 7th floor to the 3rd floor. Because of this, they had to cut off the internet at 3pm so the tech guys could move the network downstairs. That meant I couldn’t do any more work on any of my projects, so my boss told me to hit the road. More on this is a minute.
On Wednesday I met a gentleman on the elevator ride after work, who I ended up chatting with for a while. We both ended up taking the shuttle from
So leaving work at 3, with no plans for the afternoon (or the evening for that matter) I decided to pay Alan a visit, just to see what goes on at SFX, and what exactly a talent agent does. Turns out Alan represents a few broadcasters I know (ESPN’s Jeremy Schapp and Suzy Kolber) as well as a bunch of other less well-known broadcasters at local stations all around the country. As an agent it’s his job to negotiate contracts with employers, look for new job openings, and all in all keep informed about everything that might be important to his clients. He’s also got a big screen TV in his office that he uses to keep track of the day’s sporting events, and a bunch of other cool memorabilia too. His office, SFX Media represents broadcasters, and also some professional hockey players. I asked him what a hockey agent does when there’s no season. Apparently “not much”. That makes sense. When the players don’t PLAY, the agents don’t get PAID. Wow that’s clever. I’m a regular Bill Shakespeare.
Today I went to see Star Wars III with my friends Jason and Brad. Good flick. A few cheesy lines, mostly when Natalie Portman was on screen, but all in all, a really fun movie. The battle scenes were awesome, especially the opening space battle. ***SPOILERS FOLLOW*** One thing I can not believe: Anakin turns into Darth Vader. That little Haley Joel Osment look alike ends up as the baddest dude in the galaxy. It boggles the mind.***SPOILERS END***. After the movie we went down to Battery Park to see the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately that’s when it started to rain, so we spent all of five minutes paying our respects to Lady Liberty and ducked back into the subway. Then we spent a couple hours zig zagging through the subway, stopping by
